Failed Request Tracing is a new troubleshooting tool implemented in IIS7. This tool provides detailed error messages as well as what may be causing a site to load slowly. This can be enabled on a site by site basis.
To enable this tool, first start IIS Manager:
- Start -> Administrative Tools -> Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager
- Once open, select the server and expand the Sites listing.
- Select the site you are troubleshooting.
- In the action pane select Failed Request Tracing.
- You will then select enable and make note of the location where the log file is written to. In the middle pane under IIS there is an icon for Failed Request Tracing Rules; select that icon.
- In the action pane click Add.
Now you can create filters based on file extensions. Select the appropriate one and click next. Following this you will have more options to parse the logs. If you wish you can modify these options and progress further down the options.
Once done, you can select what provider will generate the error. Modify the fields as needed and select finish. When you browse the site that's loading slowly or generating an error, it'll create log files that you can use to troubleshoot the issues you're dealing with. Select the latest log file in the location that was specified earlier when you enable Failed Request Tracing. This will open a browser with detailed information on what went wrong.
